A Disconnected Memory
Movie Information
Overview
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military overthrew democratically elected president Salvador Allende in a violent coup that would usher in the seventeen-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. For one family, this seismic political rupture became a deeply personal wound. In this four-part documentary, the filmmaker returns to Chile to reconnect with her estranged father, Francisco Morales — a left-wing activist who was arrested, tortured, detained, and ultimately exiled to England following the coup. There, in exile, he built a new life and started a family, yet the shadow of his past lingered heavily over his daughter’s upbringing.
